Sunjin Galleries is pleased to unveil a rare collection of unique woodcut prints by celebrated Chinese political artist, Han Tao. "Here They Come" depicts renditions of two historical incidents: the prisoner abuse by American guards at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the Tian'anmen Square protest in China.

Created using handmade etching and print, Han Tao's views are articulated explicitly in the unique woodcut works. Audiences are struck by the direct visualization of the human rights violations in the form of physical and psychological abuse. Although set in different political systems and times, power and violence persist and Han Tao sets about reflecting this direct influence of political power on people.

The evocation of violence stresses continuity with his earlier works. Often choosing subjects that are avoided by artists, Han Tao’s works are confrontational but sincere as the artist negotiates social events that have left indelible marks on humanity. Rather than merely displaying violence, Han Tao reproduces the helplessness and powerless feeling of a spectator through his works, exposing the scars caused by power and violence.

Is he an observer, a recorder or activist? Sunjin Galleries is proud to present a rare exhibition of the works of a respected artist whose works are often forbidden to display and censored for touching on sensitive issues.

About the Artist:

Born in 1979 in Laiwu, Shandong province and now lives in Jinan and Beijing. He is in charge of the Civilian Film,the chief editor of Wild Jujube Tree Magazine,editor of Simplicity Magazine,academic host of New Art Magazine. He founded the Civilian Film School in 2000,the Civilian Film Studio in 2002 in Shandong,the Civilian Film Space in Beijing 798 Art Center at the beginning of 2005,and the Civilian Film Documents Center in Xiaopu New Art Center in Beijing to be completed by October,2007.

Sunjin Galleries is pleased to present the Singapore installment of Chua Boon Kee’s traveling exhibition, “Calligraphy in Motion”. Having had successful showcases in Taiwan and Shanghai last year, Chua’s solo tour features his distinctive calligraphy sculptures which combine the essence of traditional Chinese calligraphy with modern sculpture language.

The artistry of Chua’s work lies in his ability to translate the time-honoured practice of calligraphy into sculpture. Although not the first to incorporate calligraphy into the art of sculpture, Chua’s focus on capturing the essential spirit of calligraphy into three-dimensional forms has allowed the formation of graceful, meaningful representations.

Two-dimensional cursive scripts are ingenuously transformed into a series of steel cores that are expressively bent to capture the fluidity of a brushstroke, the thickness of these cores varying in accordance with the movement of line and spontaneity of the brush.

Chua employs a cursive style of Chinese calligraphy- this not only presents a pleasant sense of abstraction, but also allows fluidity and succession in motion as characters in cursive script are often written without lifting the brush from the paper. The continuous, linear dynamism of the cursive script are thus successfully translated into sculptural forms endowed with forceful gracefulness and controlled wildness.

About the artist:
Regarded as among the top 100 influential Koreans in art and culture, Lee Se Yong's technical background and experise in colored glazes and groundwork of ceramics is forefront among his peers. Having trained for 14 years and currently researching at the Korean Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology, Lee boasts 16 solo exhibitions in Korea and has participated in a large number group exhibition internationally since 2007. His works are collected in internationally and numerous museum in Korea. In 2010, he had a solo showcase in the Miami Art Fair and Living in Ceramics would be his first solo exhibition in Singapore. Lee holds a BFA and MFA from Kyoung Hee University.
